The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) invites applications, expressions of interest, and nominations for the position of Head of the Department of Economics in the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics (Bryan School).  The Head should have a clear, strategic vision for further advancing the research and educational programs in the Department.  The successful candidate should have an outstanding record of research accomplishment, national and global visibility, and demonstrated leadership experience in economics.  The Head serves as the chief spokesperson and advocate for the Department both within and outside of the University and ensures that the Department serves as a vital resource to private- and public-sector partners in the state and region.


About the Department

The Department has 14 members including 12 tenured or tenure-track faculty, one full-time non-tenure track senior lecturer, and one part-time non-tenure track lecturer.

In recent years faculty have published in top-ranked journals including the American Economic Review, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Econometrics, RAND Journal of Economics, Addiction, Research Policy, and Journal of International Economics. During the 2018-2019 academic year, the Department’s faculty published 22 refereed journal articles. Information about individual faculty may be found at the following URL: www.economics.uncg.edu.

Over the past four years, Department faculty members have been awarded over $1.2 million of external funding from private and public agencies including NSF, NIH, EDA, USDA, and NIST. Additionally, faculty members have served on review panels for NSF, NIH, AHRQ, and the UK NIHR, as well as on editorial boards of many of the leading journals in economics. The Department has researchers ranked in the top 10 in four areas by RePEc (May, 2019), and RePEc (May, 2019) ranks the Department in the top 25% of all U.S. economics departments.

The Department of Economics offers the B.A. and B.S. degrees in Economics, serving more than 100 majors.

The Department offers two graduate degrees—the MA in Applied Economics degree and the PhD in Economics degree. The MA in Applied Economics is a STEM program designed for students who seek careers in business, finance, or government as economists, forecasters, policy analysts, economic researchers, or managers with strong quantitative skills. Our graduates are employed in a wide variety of organizations such as research institutes, medical centers, financial institutions, and federal and state governments. Because our MA program gives its graduates a unique combination of economic theory, policy analysis, and data analytic skills, our graduates are well positioned for promotions after their initial placements.  Recent placements include Bank of America, Wells Fargo, RTI International, and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Beginning in Fall 2020, our program will be delivered entirely online with an innovative structure that will allow a broader range of qualified students to pursue the degree either full- or part-time.

The PhD in Economics is an innovative program that provides students with the advanced theoretical, quantitative, and statistical skills that are required to perform and interpret economic analyses in a wide range of policy-oriented areas including education, environmental, health, labor, public economics, and technology and innovation. Qualified applicants may enter either after earning an undergraduate degree (via the MA/PhD option) or directly after earning a Master of Economics degree. Classes are small, and students benefit from direct and frequent interactions with faculty.  Students begin working in applied research early in their programs and are encouraged to work with faculty to identify policy problems they want to investigate through their dissertations.  They frequently work with faculty on grant-funded research, and co-author papers with faculty for presentation at regional and national professional meetings. Graduates have been highly successful in the job market and work in a broad range of fields including forecasting, policy analysis and evaluation, risk analysis, and economic analysis. Recent non- academic placements include Abt Associates, RTI International, USDA, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology; academic placements include UC Santa Barbara, University of Kansas, American University, and the University of Strathclyde (UK).


The Position of Department Head

The Bryan School’s curriculum centers around four pillars of excellence—globalization, innovation, sustainability, and ethics—and UNCG’s strategic plan centers around student success, cutting edge research, and community engagement in the areas of health and wellness, vibrant communities, and global connections.  The Department of Economics supports these areas of emphasis through its research and community involvement in the areas of education policy, regional development, and health and wellness.  The Head takes a leading role in the support and guidance of the Department’s undergraduate and graduate programs at both the administrative and instructional levels and in its community engagement.

Department Heads at UNCG are both faculty and administrators, and split their time evenly between these two, equally important roles. Thus, the Department and School are seeking a dynamic leader, productive senior faculty member, and exceptional administrator who can further and build a culture of meaningful collaboration and engagement among faculty, staff, and students within the Department, School, and University.

Reporting to the Dean of the Bryan School of Business and Economics, the Head of the Department is the chief academic, administrative, and budgetary officer, as well as the primary spokesperson, for the Department. The Department Head should model excellence in teaching and research, while providing visionary and innovative leadership for the faculty, staff, and students within the Department. The Head will be responsible for providing guidance in defining the Department’s strategic priorities, building a culture of meaningful collaboration and engagement among faculty, staff, and students; recruiting and retaining a diverse and highly qualified student body and faculty; and continuing the current growth of the Department across its undergraduate programs and graduate offerings.

Specific responsibilities of the Head include:

  • Provide vision and strategic planning leadership for the Department in order to advance its goals that are in concert and alignment with the broader vision, mission, and goals of the Bryan School and the University.
  • Grow the Department’s enrollments in its undergraduate programs and particularly in the MA in economics program. These areas will be key in the Department’s growth and development plans.
  • Raise the external scholarly reputation of the Department’s faculty.
  • Ensure that faculty members are appropriately mentored in their teaching, research, and service responsibilities to enhance their prospects for career success.
  • Maintain teaching excellence and a record of scholarly accomplishments, and participate actively in mentoring doctoral candidates.
  • Expand the Department’s participation, and ultimately its success, in seeking extramural grants and contracts.
  • Manage the operations of the Department, including budgeting, processing paperwork, scheduling courses, filing reports, and executing the various required annual processes in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Work with UNCG Career Services and the Bryan School’s Office of External Affairs to encourage the Department’s undergraduate and graduate students to participate in personal and professional development activities and opportunities that position them for success in their search for internships, full-time positions, and/or graduate education.
  • Build the  strong working relationship with the Department’s advisory board to enhance further support for the Department’s programs and, where appropriate, develop connections with industry and community leaders.
  • Act as the Department communications liaison in an effective, transparent, and timely manner to and from the Dean’s office, and other departments and units.
  • Function as the chief Department representative and spokesperson in all forums.
  • As appropriate, expand the Department’s participation in Bryan School Executive Education program.
  • As appropriate, assist the Dean and development officers in identifying and cultivating fundraising prospects.



Applicants should possess an earned doctorate in economics and have an established record of high-quality scholarship in applied microeconomics and/or public policy research. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to lead the Department’s undergraduate and graduate teaching, its sponsored and unsponsored research, and its overall contribution to the missions of the Bryan School and the University.  Publications in leading journals is very important.

About the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics

The Bryan School is one of the largest business schools in North Carolina, offering eleven undergraduate majors, eight master’s degrees, eight graduate certificate programs, and four PhD programs.  The School currently enrolls more than 4,100 students.  The School holds dual accreditation in business and accounting from the AACSB – a distinction held by less than one percent of business schools in the world.  Retention and graduation rates have increased significantly the last six years.

Dean of the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics

McRae (Mac) C. Banks joined the Bryan School of Business and Economics as Dean in July 2011 and is the Margaret and Harrell Hill Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship. From 1995‐2010, Dean Banks served in a dean‐equivalent position as Head of the Department of Management at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). When he stepped down from his administrative role in 2010, WPI was ranked the #1 part‐time MBA program in the U.S. by BusinessWeek, and had garnered many other honors, accolades, and rankings. Also during that period, the business school established the Collaborative for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, centers on Wall Street, and in London and Shanghai for students to complete their required senior consulting projects, substantially increased the quantity and quality of faculty publications, substantially increased research grants, substantially increased both major and annual gifts, grew enrollments, and raised student quality.

Under his leadership of the Bryan School, a new vision and mission were developed in 2011, spawning numerous changes; the Bryan School is now recognized as an up‐and‐coming business school and its faculty and administrators are having an increasing impact on national and international conversations in a number of ways. Certainly, the rankings and accolades have been impressive. Additionally, enrollments have increased substantially; student retention and graduation rates have risen substantially; diversity has improved among students, staff, and faculty; faculty research has increased from about 1.2 peer‐reviewed journal articles per faculty member per year to 2.1 and the number of top tier journal publications has more than doubled; sponsored research has increased as has total giving. Faculty members hold more than 80 positions as editors, associate editors, or editorial board members of peer-reviewed journals.

Dean Banks has led in other venues as well. For many years he served on the Board of Directors of the Society for Advancement of Management, including as that organization’s international president. He was Chair of the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management and Chair of the American Society for Engineering Education’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Division. He recently completed a two-year term as Chair of the AACSB Continuous Improvement Review Committee, and a three-year term as a member of AACSB’s Committee on Accreditation Policy.  In July 2018 he began a three-year term on AACSB’s Board of Directors.


The University of North Carolina at Greensboro

UNC Greensboro is more than 125 years old.  Founded in 1891, UNC Greensboro came into being as a direct result of a crusade by Dr. Charles Duncan McIver on behalf of the education of women.  It was known first as the State Normal and Industrial School, and after 1897 as the State Normal and Industrial College until 1919. During the period 1919-1931, it was known as the North Carolina College for Women, and became the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina from 1932 to 1963.  In 1963, the name of the institution was changed to The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. UNC Greensboro is one of the three original campuses comprising The University of North Carolina System, along with UNC Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University.

UNC Greensboro has approximately 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Sixty‐six percent of undergraduate students are female. Forty-nine percent of undergraduate students and 29 percent of graduate students are from an ethnic minority group.  The University is recognized with the designation of Minority Serving Institution (MSI).

The University’s academic schools and programs include the College of Arts and Sciences; the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics; the School of Education; the School of Health and Human Sciences; the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, which is joint with North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University; the College of Visual and Performing Arts; the School of Nursing; UNCG Online; the Graduate School; the Warren Ashby Residential College; and the Lloyd International Honors College.

The University offers 100 undergraduate majors, 56 master’s programs, and 29 doctoral programs. The student-to-faculty ratio is approximately 18:1. Fifty percent of the 856 full‐time faculty are tenured, and 72 percent hold a doctorate or terminal degree in their field.

The University has a total budget of $273 million (FY 2018) and total endowment assets in excess of $286 million at the close of 2017. The University holds two classifications from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a “research university with high research activity” and for “community engagement” in curriculum, outreach and partnerships. More than $30 million annually in grants and contracts for research and creative activity are awarded to faculty members. Among the most prominent of UNC Greensboro’s research initiatives are the Gateway University Research Park and the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering – both partnerships with North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University.


Greensboro and the Piedmont Triad Region

Greensboro, with a population of about 280,000, is a thriving, civic-minded city with its own Symphony Orchestra, Community Theater, Opera Company, Civic Ballet, and many outstanding public and private recreation areas and facilities. The new Steven Tanger Performing Arts Center is scheduled to open this fall.

The Greensboro Coliseum Complex, just a mile from campus, is the home court for UNC Greensboro’s men’s basketball team and hosts a variety of national sporting events and major concerts throughout the year. The Coliseum Complex includes the Greensboro Aquatic Center, a state-of-the-art swim and dive facility fully meeting NCAA and FINA standards. Baseball fans enjoy watching the Greensboro Grasshoppers play in their downtown stadium, and soccer fans cheer for the Carolina Dynamo.

Of importance to many, home ownership is affordable, and both traffic gridlock and long security lines at the easy to reach airport are rare.

The third largest city in North Carolina, Greensboro is situated in the Piedmont Triad, which includes the cities of Winston-Salem and High Point, and has a population of over 1.6 million. The Piedmont Triad is home to five of Fortune’s top 500 companies, and six of the top 50 have major operations in Greensboro proper. Greensboro is a business‐friendly city and was recently named as one of the top 10 cities in the U.S. for job seekers.

Greensboro is approximately equidistant to Raleigh and Charlotte, as well as Washington DC and Atlanta.  The Piedmont Triad is an area of great natural beauty, diverse industry, cultural arts, and mild temperatures. North Carolina’s mountain resorts are an easy two-hour drive from Greensboro and the beaches of North and South Carolina are three to four hours away.

According to Forbes, North Carolina is the #1 state for business (2017 Best States for Business).  It ranks 2nd for lowest business costs, has strong industry incentives, and a young educated workforce. North Carolina is the only state that ranks in the top 20 in all six categories of the ranking: Business costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, economic climate, growth prospects, and quality of life.
